St. Rose-McCarthy Catholic School

Miss Kelcie Dowd

Transitional Kindergarten Teacher

Education: BS Child Development, California State University Fresno

Started at SRM: 2016

My teaching career began at SRM last year, as a teacher's assistant. This year I am overjoyed to be starting the first ever Transitional Kindergarten class at SRM. This school has always had a special place in my heart. I attended SRM from 1999 to 2008. When I was attending Fresno State, I had an overwhelming feeling that St. Rose-McCarthy was where I wanted to begin my career. It must have been the prompting of the Holy Spirit! I look forward to coming to work everyday; I am so fortunate to be able to work with such an amazing staff and to share the faith with our students.

"As a teacher I wear many hats, or should I say veils! Although 'officially' I'm the second and third grade teacher, these are my real assignments: Religion and Science 1st, 2nd, 3rd grades; Social Science and Math 2nd, 3rd grades; Grammar 3rd grade; and, the school Mass choir director. Even after 21 years as a teacher, I find that every moment each day is a miracle. I love working and interacting with children, sharing with them the knowledge and gifts that I have, and then seeing them progress in learning new concepts. I also enjoy working with parents whose children are preparing for the Sacraments. I strive to help families understand the importance of their involvement in their children's preparation."

"I had a long career in the public education sector, including being an elementary and junior high school vice principal and principal. I enjoy working with, and watching, students mature and progress in their subject area. Although I've had many memorable moments through the years, the most important have been when I was a part of helping a young man or young lady develop a love for education and a love for their personal Savior."

Mrs. Carol Neilson

Teacher, Fourth and Fifth Grades

Education: BA California State University Fresno

Certification: Teaching Credential, Chapman University

Family: Married, blended family

"I began my career at SRM as a longterm substitute teacher. I was soon offered the Fourth Grade class and have been there until this year when we went to a combined schedule. Over the years, I have often attended the yearly Diocesan Religious Congress in Los Angeles. It's always amazing to be with so many others who also have as their vocation the privilege of passing on our faith. I'm proud that I've finally learned how to maneuver through the National Geographic Reach for Reading online resources. It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but now I can zoom right through it. What I enjoy most about teaching are the students — especially when they have an 'ah-ha' moment."

“My roots at St. Rose-McCarthy are deep. Both of my parents and my grandmother attended Catholic school in the Midwest. Of course, I attended the school and so do my two daughters. I share this because we truly understand both the commitment and blessings that come with a Catholic education. My working career at SRM began on the Early Literacy Team and substitute teaching. In 2011, I became the 7th Grade teacher. Today, I teach both 6th and 7th grades. I am especially pleased at their accomplishments in the regional and California State Science Fair. In addition, I am honored to be the vice principal. It is my goal to plant the seeds not only of faith in my students but the love of learning too. My philosophy of education can be summed up by this: I believe it is my responsibility as a teacher to help students develop the gifts that God has bestowed on them, so that they may grow to become Christ’s hands, feet, and body, doing HIS work in the world to create a more just, caring, and equitable society.”

"I have been blessed to have a wide and varied career in education. Over the years, I've learned to lead an organization, manage logistics, and work well with people. One of my most valued experiences was starting up my business, Club Z! We began with one student and ended the 11-year run having served over 10,000 students and having worked with over 1,000 tutors. At St. Rose-McCarthy, I'm already impressed and pleased to find myself working alongside a powerful team of teachers, parents, and students. I look forward to going to work every day!"

“I’m originally from the Azores, but Hanford is now my home. I love working with the kids and Mrs. Jamie. When a child misses a parent, I give the child a hug. When I see that my hug and encouraging words brings out a smile, that makes me feel so proud to be a preschool teacher's assistant. I'm also enjoying the time I get to spend assisting Mrs. Wintz with the 1st–3rd graders. At home, I like to relax with my family, listen to music, and talk to my friends.”

Mr. Leon Pereira

"At SRM, my focus is on literature, English language arts, and social studies. I enjoy working with the students in an environment where they can grow in both mind and spirit. Every day I have the opportunity to help my students discover and learn something new about the world around them. It's memorable to watch as the students go out to work and serve in the community. They take the lessons they have learned here and go out to become a positive part of the community."

"My journey to St. Rose-McCarthy began when my husband, son, and I talked to Fr. Chuck Smith after Mass to see if the school had an opening for a teaching position. Fr. Chuck was so excited, he took my name and number, set me up for an interview, and here I am today, 'Living my passion.' Over the years, I've held numerous positions with SRM. I truly enjoy watching children discover their God-given gifts and talents. Children have a way of putting life in perspective. They are intrigued and fascinated by the little things in life that adults often overlook or just pass by. A child's smile can light up the world."

“I feel that God brought me here to do his will. I enjoy making others feel welcome. My career at SRM began in the literacy program. It was truly an honor to be asked to open St. Rose Preschool and then to see it succeed was wonderful. When I’m not working, I teach exercise classes twice a week. I also enjoy relaxing with my family and watching movies.”

"Taking care of the books for SRM is a challenging job. I'm pleased to have managed setting up accounts receivable (billing) and I am now updating accounts payable. When I come up for air from my bookkeeping cubicle, I love to see the kids with all their energy. After work, I like to spend time with my family and be involved with church activities."

"My teaching career began in Lemoore and Laton public schools. I taught first grade, K–1 combination, and also worked as a Reading Resource Teacher. While teaching in Lemoore, I was selected to serve as a mentor teacher for both new and experienced teachers. My focus was English Language Development and classroom management. Although I did not attend Catholic schools, my husband and I had a fervent desire for our children to receive a Catholic education. All of our children have attended or currently attend SRM. I understand and appreciate the sacrifices parents make to send their children to SRM. At SRM there are two things that I love about my job: first is that my job is a ministry where I can openly pray and talk about God in all I do; and, second, is seeing the enthusiasm and joy that the children bring to school each day."
